About DJ ITAL
DJ Ital
DJ Ital (born 1968, Hackney, London) is a British DJ, producer, and event promoter. A pioneer of the jungle music genre, he is best known for his work with the influential pirate radio station Kool FM and as the founder of Vital Fest. In 2026, his historical importance to British music was recognized by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Career
Ital began his career in the early 1990s, emerging from the East London underground scene. He became a core member of Kool FM (94.5), a station central to the development of jungle and drum and bass.
"Decibels"
In 1995, Ital produced the track "Decibel" (commonly known as "Decibels"), which was featured on the Kool FM - The 5th Anniversary compilation album. The track is cited as a significant example of the mid-90s jungle sound, blending complex breakbeats with heavy electronic-influenced basslines.
Media and Documentaries
Ital has been featured in several retrospective accounts of the jungle movement. In October 2006, he was interviewed by Giles Wood for Knowledge Magazine (Issue 85), where he discussed his technical approach to mixing and the evolution of the pirate radio scene.
In 2024, he produced and released the documentary series DJ Ital: The Journey on YouTube. The series serves as an archival project, documenting the "Golden Era" of jungle through first-hand accounts and rare footage.
Vital Fest
DJ Ital is the founder and promoter of Vital Fest, a club night series and festival based primarily in Hackney, East London. Since its inception in 2023, the event has been hosted at several notable venues, including The Hackney Social (Bohemia Place), The Yard Theatre, and Arch 14.
The event is characterized by its focus on the "foundation" sounds of the genre, frequently featuring veteran artists such as DJ Brockie, The Ragga Twins, and Jumpin Jack Frost. Resident Advisor has noted the event's role in preserving the community-led sound system culture of East London.
